Woof Woof Meow Quilt with Pockets for the Kitties

Years ago I bought a panel of cats and dogs called Woof Woof Meow.  I got a jelly roll of the fabric and while I made the cat and her kittens, I never finished up the quilt.  Well, five years later, I finally finished up the Cat Quilt with Pockets.

The cats and dogs were fabric panels designed by Stacy Iest Hsu.  If you remember I made some of these little cuties a couple of years ago.  At that time I even made them a small quilt to wrap them in so that they would stay warm.

Now I've finished the kids quilt made from the jelly roll and added five pockets to the front of the quilt.  I designed the quilt and when I bought the fabrics I knew that I wanted to add some pockets for the kittens or puppies.  

Here is a pic of two of the kittens in their little pockets.  I thought it would be fun to crawl under a quilt and have your pets close by.  You could also use the pockets for other toys, too.

Here is the quilt before I added on the pockets.  I made the pockets with a gather so that the pets would fit into them.  I have to say, I'm so glad that it's done.  I put it in my granddaughter's room in hopes that she will like it.  

What's to come?  There are still more strips in the jelly roll that have blue fabric in them.  Maybe someday I will make a second quilt with some dogs to match.  You never know.

 

Howdy Cowgirl

A few years ago I picked up a panel to make a little cowgirl and her horse, pillow and her own quilt from the Howdy fabric line by Stacy Iest Hsu.  I finally got around to sewing it all together for my granddaughter.  The fabric in it coordinates with the little quilt that I made for her, see the previous post.

I first started with the little cowgirl.  She is just so sweet.  I made the skirt and bandana to dress her up like a cowgirl.  She also comes with a pillow and her own quilt to make.  

The pony was fun to make, too, however I had to shop around for just the right sized dowel.  I set her in the bed along with the new Bow Tie quilt that I made for my g-girl.  The whole set took much longer to make than you would think - ha ha!  But I like how it all came together in the end.  

Now to see what other panels I may have to sew...

 

Bow Tie Quilt - Quilt #1 for 2024

One of my Facebook groups that I belong to is Fig Tree Quilts.  Joanna Figuera has many pretty soft fabric lines, patterns and quilt-alongs on her page.  I have loved her fabrics for a long time.  She is often featured in American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine and last quarter she had a pretty Bow Tie quilt with a quilt-along.  

I always want to join the quilt-alongs when I see them, but don't always have the time for sewing them.  A couple of months ago, I re-evaluated my spare time (ha ha, right?).  And I decided to make more time for sewing in my life.  As part of my day, I have added 20 minutes per day in my sewing room.

This has been a game changer for me.  I have made time to sew and I am loving it.  I am even cleaning up and organizing my sewing room, a little at time, of course.  

So for my first quilt that I have finished in 2024, I sewed along with the Figgies and made a little quilt for my granddaughter who is turning three.  

For my quilt I used a fabric line that I've had for about 3-4 years called Howdy by Stacy Iest Hsu.  It has cute little cowgirls on it, along with cowboy boots, horseshoes and pretty paisley fabrics.

Here is a close-up of the fabrics.  I just love the pretty pinks and how the aqua fabric gives it a little contrast.

After I finished the quilt, I made a little pillow and pillowcase for her with some of the leftover fabric.  I would still like to make her a banner for her room and possibly a table topper for her end table.  It's a nice addition for her big girl bed and I can't wait for her to use it.  

 

Basket of Kitties

Don't you just love these little kitties?  They are a panel that I bought a couple of years ago called Woof, Woof, Meow cat panel by Stacy Iest Hsu.  There is another adult cat that I still have to make.  The set comes with the 4 kittens.  

I started making these kitties a year ago or so (ha ha) and found them in my sewing room.  Today I put together a small quilt for them to cuddle up with and hope to set them out for my granddaughter to play with.

I have a puppy dog panel and a second kitty panel to still complete.  I'm hoping by the time that I'm done that the whole basket is filled with cats and dogs galore!

The adult cats have a pouch to put the kittens in, but I think it needs extra fabric and a dart to make the pouch fit any of the babies.  You can see in the photo that the pouch is very tight.  

I will try something different for the next adult cat.  We'll see how it comes out.

Alphabet Letter Set

Before Christmas I was thinking about making an alphabet set of letters made from fabric for my granddaughter.  She's getting close to 2 years old and I thought that it would be a fun way for her to learn her letters and begin to spell simple words, when she is ready.  

I looked at what people were doing on Pinterest and Etsy and came up with a plan.  I found a font on my computer with basic letter shapes and enlarged the letters to 500 points.  Then I made the letters an outline instead of fill so that they didn't use up all of my ink when I printed them.

The letters are about 4 1/2 inches tall.  I cut them out, traced them onto pretty fabrics and sewed on the line.  I used disappearing ink so that after I sewed the outline, the ink would disappear.  

To make the "quilt sandwich," I ironed some stiff interfacing to the fabric.  This step keeps the letters from fraying quickly.  Then I put a layer of felt next and a white fabric for the back.  I sewed each letter along the lines and then cut them out, keeping about 1/8 inch along the edge.  The white back is so that she will know if the letter is backwards.  

For some of the letters, I made 2 or 3 of them, especially the vowels and other letters depending on what she would need to spell her name and some simple words.  I made sure that there were 2 "N's" and "A's" so that she could spell Nana!  

Today I made a small basket for her to keep the letters in so they wouldn't get lost.  

I quilted the bag and added some handles so she can carry her letters around with her.  

The fabric that I used is called Just Another Walk in the Woods.  I had a couple of layer cakes (10" cuts of the fabric line) and picked out cute, bright fabrics for the letters.

This week I'll stop by Michaels and pick up a board and wrap flannel around it so that the letters will stick to the flannel like the old flannel boards that we used to have in Sunday School years ago.

I can't wait to give her this gift and start teaching her the ABC's.  Would I make another one of these?  Originally I thought that I would make two sets for her, one for here and one for her home.  Now I'm not sure.  It took a lot longer than I thought to make the letters.  I could have easily made a baby quilt in the same amount of time!  Lol.
